The Seminole Tribe of Florida said on Thursday it was buying the famed Hard Rock business, including its casinos, restaurants, hotels and huge collection of rock ’n’ roll memorabilia, in a ground breaking 965 million (m) US dollar deal with a British company.

STORYLINE
The Seminole Tribe of Florida said on Thursday it was buying the famed Hard Rock business, including its casinos, restaurants, hotels and huge collection of rock ’n’ roll memorabilia, in a ground breaking 965 million (m) US dollar deal with a British company.
The deal with London-based Rank Group is believed to be an American Indian tribe’s first purchase of a major international corporation of its size, the Seminoles said.
It includes 124 Hard Rock Cafes, four Hard Rock Hotels, two Hard Rock Casino Hotels, two Hard Rock Live! concert venues and stakes in three unbranded hotels.
To mark the occasion, scores of tribal leaders and others gathered at the New York City Hard Rock café.
Hard Rock’s CEO and President Hamish Dodds was on hand and presented his new "bosses" with a symbolic present: an historic Hank Williams Sr. Guitar.
Seminole Tribal Council representative Max Osceola Jr, said the purchase of Hard Rock is a historic moment for Native Americans.
"You’re sharing a little bit of Seminole history," he told the audience. " You know our ancestors sold Manhattan for trinkets. Today, with the acquisition of the Hard Rock Cafes, we’re going to buy Manhattan back, one hamburger at a time!"
Osceola said that the acquisition is an extension of what the tribe has been doing since early the last century — building for the future.
"We’re looking beyond the borders, the four-square borders of our reservations. We’re looking, not just in the United States, we’re looking in the world, so this income will provide for our tribe, for our young people that are coming up. They’re going to have the ability to manage, operate, and this is the first step. This is the first stone that’s being thrown in the pond that going to go into a tidal wave. So, with this acquisition it’s going to do nothing but help the tribe. And we’re going to invite people to come and see. And we want to rock!" Osceola said.
The Seminoles were the first US tribe to get into the gambling business in 1979.
More recently, they had partnered with Hard Rock in successful hotel, gambling and entertainment complexes in Tampa and Hollywood in tourist-friendly Florida.
Experts believe the tribe has the ability to expand their gaming interests nationally by partnering with a well-known brand, experts said.
The Seminoles has about 3,300 members living on and off Florida reservations and all of them receive payments due to the success of casinos.
They are pacesetters in the growing world of Indian gaming.
After selling tax-free tobacco products, the tribe opened a bingo hall in 1979 in Hollywood.
It survived legal challenges from the state over the right to be in the gambling business, which led to other casinos on reservations in Florida and opened the door for tribal gaming across the nation.
US tribes now have more than 22 billion (b) in annual revenues from gambling, according to government figures.
